SPEAK EASY && JOHNNY GARNER
DARK MAIDEN && TALIA SMITH
WHISPERING MELODY && JAMES COLLURA
Two more weeks and it would be Breeder’s Cup time around The Wire. For Firestone, they had to focus on the week to come. More than six horses over two tracks all in one week. The first group were the dirt juveniles. First to come out on the track was fiery little Dark Maiden. Mai had already proven that despite her size, she would put you in your place. Following her was the shy, dark bay filly by the name of Whispering Melody. Since picking her up from the Intrepid auction, Wendy had definitely settled down and was much more relaxed, you could say she was even a little bit social in her field. Since Talia was on Mai, Wendy had newcomer James as her rider today. While the two fillies walked around the track, Johnny rode up on wonder horse Speak Easy. The black colt easily climbed up the rankings despite his unknown bloodlines, something that most juveniles in his class had regarding proven bloodlines. He has 3 HOTY points to his name and was two wins off of a grade three status.
After a while, the horses were all ready and trotted towards the starting gates. Straight away, Wendy was put into the gates first, and she was much calmer than other times. Sonny was the next one to be loaded into the gate and he went into it without a fuss. Mai decided it would be fun to play a game but eventually went in as well. All jockeys anticipated the rush, and when it did happen all of the horses broke clean. Sonny broke a bit clumsily and jostled the gate he leapt out, but this didn't faze him or his jockey as Johnny calmly guided him to the middle of the track right beside Mai, who had quickly hustled to the lead. Wendy remained in last position as she liked to hang back and watch the crowd unfold in front of her.
Mai was holding the lead well over her stablemate, who galloped on confidently a length behind her. Johnny knew that Mai was a sprinter and would tire out faster than Sonny would, and that’s why they would be making their move shortly due to the shortened workout length. James had Wendy right where Carter told him to put her. Wendy was a smart thinker, and she knew when to lengthen her stride and when to conserve her energy.
The sound of thundering of hooves was all that could be heard as the juveniles rounded the final turn. Dirt was being thrown right into Sonny’s face as Mai tried to quicken her pace. In Mai’s head, neither of the two behind her were a threat. Little did she know that Wendy had started to sneak up on Sonny, who had started to sneak up on her. Soon enough all three horses were battling head to head, Mai on the inside, Sonny in the middle and Wendy on the far outside. Johnny gave Sonny his signal and the black colt shot ahead and easily took the win by half a length. Wendy had a nose over Mai on the inside, who had put in a good fight against the milers.
